Lina Gladh from Fort Nelson, B.C., raced her team to a win at the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Championship in Soda Springs Idaho.
The conditions were perfect for racing with day time highs around -5C, and the trail was in great shape. This allowed the amazing sled dog athletes to run at an accelerated  pace, as they knew the trail was safe and secure. The dogs and mushers alike prefer a base of hard packed snow, allowing the athletes to move freely and fast.
And move fast they did, as Lina’s team shattered the track record en route to claiming the inaugural Rocky Mountain Championship.
Lina is the wife to world champion dog musher, Buddy Streeper, and they own and operate Streeper Kennels in northern British Columbia Canada. Alongside their two children, Alva and Clara, the Streeper family has been travelling the racing circuit across the North American continent. Just last week they were racing in Minnesota, and over the next 10 days they will travel to Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
Team Streeper was well represented in the race, having entering six different teams in the two separate classes. All of the Streeper teams placed very well, claiming some of the top spots in both the six dog and open class races.
Next up on the racing circuit is the most prestigious race in the lower 48; the mushers and dogs ready themselves for the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race, to be run in and around Wyoming. This unique race takes place over eight days, and covers nearly 400 miles of trails. The course is demanding, as the trails will criss-cross the back bone of the Rocky Mountains, and run back and forth over the continental divide.
The Canadian Express, Buddy Streeper, returns to the race with a goal of claiming back the title. He had his string of three consecutive championships snapped last year when he finished second place overall. When asked about the coming race, Streeper said, “I’m happy to be back and I’m motivated to win. I have been thinking about my team’s return here since we lost the race last year. I am motivated and the team is strong; we’re ready roll.”
