Nexen’s BAR Team Receives 2013 Canadian Society of Safety Engineering’s (CSSE) Special Project Award

Congratulations to Nexen’s Balzac Abandonment and Reclamation (BAR) Team on receiving the 2013 Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) Special Project Award, a category that received numerous submissions.
The CSSE Special Project Award is presented for a “one-time” Special Project that advances the profession, provides research and development opportunities, or promotes Health & Safety to the Occupational Health and Safety Community, Employers and/or the community at large.
The BAR Team received the award for developing custom planning, management, and execution procedures to strive for a “perfect day” every day, resulting in the combined employee/contractor Total Recordable Injury Frequency of zero over more than 26 months and over 1,000 days without a Lost Time Incident; integrating HSE&SR staff and strong leadership to produce a culture of sustainability at all levels which led to operation and execution excellence; implementing initiatives that maximized recycling of waste materials (metal, sulphur and glycol), selling over $2 million of otherwise valueless assets for reuse, reducing surface water impact by 80 per cent and successfully managing ever encroaching wildlife; and, encompassing not only abandonment and reclamation project work; but also the day-to-day activities involved in maintaining regulatory compliance which has led to provincial regulators describing the Balzac project as the template for all future large sour gas plant abandonment and reclamation projects.
“End of asset life activities, such as decommissioning, abandonment and reclamation, often provide very different challenges to production and maintenance operations,” says Andrew Hamilton, Project Manager, Balzac. “I’d like to thank all those involved in the Balzac Abandonment and Reclamation Program. This award shows the strength of our team and our commitment to implementing a culture of safety and sustainability at all levels.”
The awards will be presented at the CSSE Professional Development Conference in Montreal, Quebec on Monday September 16, 2013.
