It was a scene out of the Movie “Mystery Alaska” where adults and youth were lacing up their skates to play on the man made ice rink, but this game was different, it was Atlin youth against the RCMP.
Atlin has a population of approximately 350 residents and of that community, 35 are students of all ages who attend the Atlin School. The Detachment is comprised of a corporal, two constables and a public office clerk.
Constable Michael Esson spear-headed the event dubbed, “Hockey Day in Atlin”. The detachment members worked together to bring the entire community on board including six members from the Whitehorse Detachment.
With the help of the Atlin Volunteer Fire Department and the use of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation water truck, an ice rink started to take form in early November. The community worked together for months ensuring the rink was solid and ready for a brutal game of youth vs cops.
Atlin Detachment Commander, Corporal Richard Brown organized the youth in preparation for the big day by running regular hockey practices for all ages twice a week since December.
“We wanted to include as many people as possible by having a day of skating, skills training and then finish up with a hockey game,” stated Atlin Detachment Commander, Cpl. Richard Brown.
RCMP members from the Whitehorse Detachment brought hockey jerseys for all to wear. Parents, the Atlin School, and the BC Conservation Service provided food and drinks for the barbecue feast. The community Zamboni, driven by a local RCMP member, ensured the ice was clear and safe for both teams.
The hockey game was a huge success and had all the youth asking when the next playoff was set for.
Looks like Hockey Day in Atlin will be an official annual event with a few hockey practices added to the community schedule.
