Calling all high school students – show us your skills and win

Create a video about a trade you are passionate about and you could win a Macbook Pro for you and $2K for your school! It’s time to pursue your dream in trades!
VICTORIA – Discover Trades BC launched the “Show Us Your Skills” video contest to high school students across BC. The contest, which asks students to create a short video depicting the trade they are passionate about, aims to increase awareness that a career in trades is an excellent option in BC. Contestants have the opportunity to win Apple products for themselves and up to $2,000 cash for their school to support trades and technology education.
Recent BC Labour Market statistics indicate that by 2020 there will be more than one million job openings in BC and nearly half of those jobs will require trades and technical skills. “Encouraging students to pursue a career in trades now will help fill these job openings in the future,” states Kelly Betts, Project Lead for Discover Trades BC, Journeyman Welder and Educator, “A career in trades is a rewarding and fulfilling career option for many British Columbians.”
To enter the contest students simply create a short video expressing their passion for an industry recognised trade such as – carpentry, plumbing, welding, baking, hairstylist, automotive service, etc.
Contestants will then ask their family, friends, and classmates to vote for their video. The ten videos that receive the most votes will move on to the judging round. An expert panel of judges will judge the top ten videos based on the contestants’ creativity and passion for the trade depicted. Three winners will be selected. There are three prizes to be won:
First prize wins a Mac Book Pro 13” 2.5 GHz (value $1,119) and $2,000 (two thousand dollars) for the first prize winner’s high school to support trades and technology education.
Second prize wins an Apple iPad with Retina display, 16GB (value $499) and $1,000 (one thousand dollars) for their high school to support trades and technology education.
Third prize wins an Apple iPad Mini, 16GB (value $329) and $500 (five hundred dollars) for their high school to support trades and technology education.
Discover Trades BC is an organisation, funded by the BC Government, committed to increasing awareness and interest in trades among British Columbia’s high school students. Ultimately, the goal is for more BC students to consider a career in the trades and for more teachers to introduce trades to students in the classroom. Students, parents and educators can discover these opportunities on the Discover Trades BC website.
