Seasonal Recipes for
Delicious Homegrown Food
By Carolyn Herriot
The Zero-Mile Diet Cookbook: Seasonal Recipes for Homegrown Food, gardening activist Carolyn Herriot encourages readers to indulge in local food year round.
A companion book to the national best seller The Zero-Mile Diet: A Year-Round Guide to Growing organic food, this cookbook makes the shift toward sustainability delicious by putting homegrown-or locally sourced-fruits and vegetables on the table.
The Zero-Mile Diet Cookbook contains over 160 vegetarian recipes (as well as a few with fish) that can provide a balanced diet. These are complemented by creative strategies for living a life that is healthy both for the planet and the body. The book is also full of great advice for preserving food with various storage techniques as well as tips on canning, dehydrating and pickling. In addition to this, there is an A-Z guide for easy-to-grow culinary herbs, ideas for teaching children to eat well, and fantastic information on nutrition and well-being.
The recipes in The Zero-Mile Diet cookbook call for seasonal ingredients that are able to be locally grown, foraged or sourced (which also tend to be more  nutritious and more flavourful than mass-produced food). Each season brings  special treats: in spring, there is great advice on growing sprouts in the home, with a zippy recipe for Sprout Salad; the bounty of summer is collected in dishes such  as Fresh Mint Tabouleh and Mediterranean Stuffed Grape Leaves; fall is wild  mushroom season, and is celebrated with recipes such as Creamy Chanterelle  Mushroom Soup and Lobster Mushroom Pasta Bake; winter’s holiday festivity is  expressed with tasty recipes for Yule Logs and Mulled Spiced Wine.
With the aid of the delectable recipes in this cookbook, working toward a healthy and environmentally conscious diet is a gratifying experience. Adopting the zero-mile diet is sure to enhance the pleasure of enjoying great food.
