Seanah Roper (left) led a special writers group. She, along with Tracey Muise and Chris Top, read aloud the stories they wrote on behalf of the murdered women at Robert Pickton’s farm in Vancouver.

Fort Nelson Literacy Society Program Coordinator, Seanah Roper, facilitated the “Voiceless Women” project with the Women’s Writing Circle in honour of ‘16 Days of Activism’.  Some of the stories were presented at the Remembrance Ceremony held at the Fort Nelson aboriginal Friendship Society on Thursday, December 6th.
Roper encourages women to inquire about the writing group. “The Women’s Writing Circle is a group offered by the Fort Nelson Community Literacy Society that promotes healing and connections among women in the spirit of the written word. This group is open to any and all women from all walks of life, regardless of writing ability,” she said.
The project involved looking at missing women from Vancouver’s downtown area during the Robert Pickton murders.
“We had special guest speaker Laurie Murphy, who lead a group discussion on women and violence as an introduction to the writing project. Each participant received the profile of a missing woman. It was her (the participant) task throughout the week to write a piece giving her (the missing woman) worth and humanity, honouring her life. The theme behind the project was to give these marginalised women a voice, where the world had rendered them voiceless and muted,” says Roper. Those who took part in the writing project include Crystal Barry, Holly DiMaggio, Chris Top, Seanah Roper, Laurie Murphy, Brin Murphy, Sondra Dee, and Tracey Muise. The following are some of the pieces presented that night:
