Spectra sends letter to Northern Rockies regarding environmental assessment of Cypress area development

Earlier this month, Spectra Energy submitted a project description to the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office (BC EAO) for its proposed new natural gas transmission system from the Cypress area of northeast British Columbia to the Prince Rupert area on the north coast.
The proposed project has now been accepted by the BC EAO, which has determined based on the scale and scope as outlined in the project description that an environmental assessment is required. The province of British Columbia will now be working to determine the process for an extensive environmental assessment, which will provide multiple opportunities for communities, local governments, the general public and other interested stakeholders to comment and participate in the review. It will also provide for an in-depth consultation process with Aboriginal groups.
Our project description includes the early conceptual route that we have developed together with early input from Aboriginal and local communities and other affected stakeholders. This route includes multiple alternatives at the western end to reach the Prince Rupert area.
During the environmental assessment, this proposed route will be assessed and will be refined further, based on continued consultation with local and Aboriginal communities and other affected stakeholders, as well as a significant amount of field work, which has only just begun. A copy of the project description can be found here on the BC EAO’s electronic Project Information Centre (e-PIC). If you would prefer to receive a printed copy of the project description, please let us know.
We’ve already begun collecting input and ideas, and we’re committed to continue that work. You can join our conversation about this project at www.energyforbc.ca or by calling us toll free at 1 (855) 757-4755.
