GW Carlson Principal’s Report
There are 183 students in the building this year. The GWC Playground hub seems to be the big attraction. Great to see so many families utilising the playground over the summer months. The PAC are planning for the installation of a special needs picnic table, garbage cans and benches around the playground.
The Carlson SPC will be meeting to finalise the Growth Plan for the coming 2012/13 year. “We continue to be pleased with our overall results so there will be minimal updates/changes in the Growth Plan. We currently have a reading and math goal for the upcoming year,” Mr Stephenson said.
“This year we have a focus group consisting of a few teachers. We are examining our assessments in the area of math and examining our programs which support students in math. We are asking questions such as, “What are we doing to support struggling students in the area of math?”
Goals Selection
1. All students will fully meet or exceed expectations in math by the end of grade four.
2. All students will fully meet or exceed expectations in reading by the end of grade four.
The first AGM PAC was on September 18th. A new PAC was elected which consists of: Natasha Ellingson, President; Rewa Pene, Vice President; Lorrie Boomer, Treasurer; Julie Rose, Secretary; Chen Morin, SPC Rep.
“I would like to thank the PAC from last two years for all their hard work. It was amazing what this PAC accomplished in a short time. Without your efforts many programs would not be so successful,” Scott Stephenson, principal, said.
There are a number of programs running through our PAC, including the BC Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program. “We are beginning our sixth year of the fruit and vegetable program. The program is a huge success. Students have access to the fruit and veggies in their classroom every second week. Students can make their own decision on whether to taste the fruits or vegetables offered.”
Milk Program:
Milk is served to the students who participate three times a week. The cost for the program is minimal and the students who participate enjoy having milk with their lunch.
Fresh Fruit Program:
The PAC provides baskets of bananas and apples for students to enjoy and snack on daily in each class. This program runs separately from the BC Fruit and Vegetable snack program. This is the fifth year for this program and the students enjoy having access to fruit. Our leadership students share the responsibility of washing and distributing the fruit each morning.
Early Intervention:
We are up and running in our SSRT department. It has been a very busy September for the SSRTs as they worked to coordinate schedules, staff, students, and a new room. Currently we have students participating in Great Leaps, Math Recovery, Levelled Literacy Intervention, Sight Words and a variety of other programs to meet their individual needs. We are striving to give these students the extra skills which will make them successful learners.
ROCKS AWARDS:
This year we decided that we will present ROCKS Awards. The ROCKS Awards focus on our five school rules: Respect, On Task Behaviour, Caring, Kindness, and Safety. The staff thought that praise should be meaningful and specific. Teachers nominate one student per class per month. Our EAs also nominate, as a group, two students. Also, as a school, we nominate one parent/community member for this award (community involvement).
