Obituary – Ronald Hird, 64

January 16th, 1946 – March 2nd, 2010

After a seven year battle with cancer, Ron passed away peacefully, with his wife Josie by his side, at the Treherne Hospital on Tuesday March 2, 2010 at the age of 64 years. Ron leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife Josie (nee Hilhorst); two children, Darcy and wife Sherri along with his three grandchildren, Braylee, Joshua and Brenna; and daughter Sherry Hird. His mother Lillian; nine brothers and sisters, Arnold (Janice), Barbara Hrehorsky, Robert (Doreen), Wilbert (Wanda), Stewart (Linda), Mervin (Shawna), Gerald (Lovie), Darlene (Rene) Dujardin and Daren (Sandra). Ron also leaves to mourn Josie’s family; her mother Laurette Hilhorst; her brothers and sisters, Rita (Elmer) Hellegards, Denis Hilhorst, Michael (Joanne) Hilhorst and Pat (Ken) Van De Kerckhove; and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Ron was predeceased by his father Duncan Hird, his father-in-law Bill Hilhorst and by one brother-in-law Bill Hrehorsky. Ron was born January 16, 1946 in Lavenham, MB to Duncan and Lillian Hird. He was raised north of Treherne with 7 brothers and 2 sisters. As a young man, Ron enjoyed working on the farms of neighbors after school. Ron and Josie were married in Holland, MB and resumed their life in Winnipeg. Soon there would be an addition to their family, Darcy Ronald arrived October 19, 1967 in Winnipeg. It was evident from an early age that this boy was cut from the same cloth as his father. Shortly after, the Hird’s moved to Fort Nelson, BC where they would live for 5 years. They decide to move back to Holland, MB to be closer to family which was important to them both. The family circle became complete on August 22, 1975, when their little girl Sherry Leanne, joined them. She was, without a doubt, Daddy’s Little Girl. Ron was extremely close to both his children. R on’s love of the outdoors and hunting kept him busy. On numerous weekends you could find the family out camping in the sand hills, or Ron out hunting with his son, brothers, or friends. Ron was very meticulous when it came to vehicles, work, tools or his yard and his work ethic was second to none. Everything had to be secured on the truck twice as tight as need be because nothing was going to fall off the truck on his watch. Ron’s first grandchild, Braylee Laurette Ileen, arrived December 3, 1995. Joshua Ronald William on April 26, 1999 and Brenna Darci Lynn on June 3, 2002. The kids were very fortunate to be able to spend the time that they did with their Grampa, and always seemed to learn something new while being in his company. Ron and Josie returned to Fort Nelson, BC in July 1999 for what was supposed to be a month and in 2006 they once again returned to Holland. During Ron’s time in Fort Nelson, he and Darcy worked well together. Ron had passed on his love of hunting to his son and Ron was about to embark on many adventures with him. Darcy had Ron up the river, in the mountains while grizzly bears walked around their camp at night. Ron would be trying to fix something on the boat motor while Darcy would continue to run the river. They would on occasion wake up to a snow covered camp but this was the world Ron enjoyed. After all it was considered God’s country. For the last seven years we have watched Ron ride a long and sometimes upsetting rollercoaster. Although there were times when we thought there was no way he could fight this battle, he would look at Josie after, once again being told the end was drawing near, and say, “Ha you didn’t get me that time either!” and onward his fight would go. We owe so much of his extra time on this earth to Josie, who has also fought a very difficult battle herself, and sometimes her battle was much harder. When you see her at the store or at the mail, please stop and have a chat with her; don’t be afraid that you will not know what to say because, although sad, she will find comfort in any stories or words that you have to share. As we near the end in our words of remembrance about Ron let us ask that tonight when you are sitting quietly reflecting on your day, pour yourself a Kahula and milk, Ron’s favorite cocktail, and toast yourself because you were fortunate enough to have been blessed in knowing a truly wonderful and remarkable man. YOUR WORK ON EARTH IS DONE RON… GO REST HIGH ON ELK MOUNTAIN. Memories are more than a link to the past… Sometimes they are all that we have that will last. Funeral services were held at the Holland Community Center on Monday March 8, 2010 at 2 pm with Sandra Rex officiating. Family interment followed in the St John Berchmans Catholic Cemetery.
